"T.Y." as he was known to his friends, was born in 1925 in Jean Yang County, Szechuan Province, in midwest China. Studying civil engineering, he graduated in 1952 in the top ten percent of his class at the National Taiwan University. He began studying at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL. after his arrival in the United States in 1957. He earned a Masters Degree of Science in Engineering in 1959 and a Degree of Philosophy in Civil and Coastal Engineering in 1972. In 1971, while at the Universtiy of Florida, Dr. Chiu began working on a thirty year project to protect Florida's coastal construction control line. Then, in 1982, the project was moved to Florida State University in Tallahassee, as the newly established Beaches and Shores Resource Center with Dr. Chiu as the Director. The project was completed in 2001 and Dr. Chiu retired in June of 2003 after a forty-five year career. Dr. Chiu is survived by his wife, Anclia; his son, Frank and his wife Stacy; a daughter Leslie; his grandson Thomas and another grandson due in December.
