Miss Carlaftes was a native of New York City, and a longtime resident of Miami., where she attended Miami Senior High School. She was a graduate of the University of Miami, receiving both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education.

In addition to classroom teaching and several adminstrative postions, her educational career in Dade County included twelve years as principal of Whispering Pines Elementary School, and four years as principal of Twin Lakes Elementary School.

Upon her retirement in 1982, Miss Carlaftes moved to Tallahassee and was employed in the Office of the Governor during the Graham/Mixon adminstration.
