TALLAHASSEE – Byron Dixon Camp, age 28, departed from this life as a result of sudden cardiac arrest, Wednesday, June 17, 2009 in Tallahassee.
A memorial service will be held at Faith Presbyterian Church, 2 pm, Tuesday, June 23, 2009. There will be a celebration of Dixon's life directly following at the family's home on Oakdale Street. Bevis Funeral (850-385-2193) is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Organization for Artificial Reefs (OAR) (2545 Blairstone Pines Drive, Tallahassee, FL 32301) for the Dixon Camp Memorial Reef.
Born April 21, 1981 in Tallahassee, Dixon graduated from Leon High School in 2000 and received a degree in Political Science with a minor in Communications from Florida State University in December, 2007. For the past five and a half years, he worked at Calico Jack's in a variety of positions, including supervisor.
At Leon High, Dixon served as Senior Class Representative, was listed in the Who's Who Among American High School Students (1997-1998) and received the Leon Leadership Award. He was an Anchor Gent, a member of Leon Crew, the Key Club and was selected for the Homecoming Court. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity at FSU, where he served as an officer.
Dixon loved everything to do with any kind of bird hunting – turkey and dove – and spent much of his spare time on the family property in Grady County, GA. He loved fishing and boating at St. Teresa Beach, slalom skiing and music; he played both acoustic and electric guitars.
In his death, Dixon also gave life. A strong supporter of organ donation, Dixon's own generous donation helped save at least four lives.
Dixon is survived by his parents, Byron and Kitty Camp; one sister, Emmie, his twin brother, Elliott; his paternal grandmother, Ann Camp; his maternal grandfather, Jack T. Ball; five aunts and uncles: Stephen Camp, Carden Camp Alexandre (Michael), David Camp (Jody), Ellen Camp McFarlain (John) and Jack T. Ball Jr. (Irene); four cousins, Michael Hawkins Alexandre, Brinson Camp, Chad Camp, Ann Bannerman McFarlain; and a much-loved Labrador Retriever, Isabelle. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Spurgeon Camp and his maternal grandmother, Emily Byron Ball.
