Ken was born in Summit, New Jesey, and soon after moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where he graduated from Plantation High School. After graduating, Ken attended Stetson University, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He later earned his Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Florida State University.
In 1977 he opened the commercial interior design company, Collier Interiors, Inc. in Tallahassee. Over the next 30 years Ken committed himself to makeing innovative contributions to the Tallahassee community, including sponsoring Florida State University's "Seven Days of Opening Nights".
Ken was an avid classic car enthusiast, spending time researching and working on his own collection. He and his wife Joan also enjoyed weekends sailing the St. John's River aboard their boat, "Sea Garden".
Survivors include his wife Joan Peacock Collier of Tallahassee; their children Andrea Murray of Jacksonville, Eric Peterson of Tallahassee, Ken Powell, Jr. (and wife Amy) of Palm Coast and Rebecca Mayhann (and husband Jason) of Tallahassee; his parents Jim and Marie Collier of Tallahassee; sister Kathy Owens (and husband Jerry) of Van Buren, Arkansas; brother Rick Collier (and wife Erlene) of Tallahassee; step-brother Gary Collier (and wife Jane) of New York City; four nieces; one nephew; and three grandchildren.
