Martha Jean “Celery” Chambers Shirley, 60, Shelbyville, passed away Friday, August 20, 2010 at Jewish Hospital. A native of Shelbyville, she was the daughter of the late Willie Chambers and Ida Belle Jackson Chambers.
She was a line worker for Webster Electric in Frankfort some 20 years. She was a member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church where she was a member of The Lay Organization and served as a Sunday School teacher, a member of the choir, a missionary, a steward and as a stewardness.
In addition to her parents, one sister, Annie Mae Chambers, and one brother, Roy W. Evans, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughter, Martina Elaine Shirley of Shelbyville; six sisters, Mary W. Chambers of Frankfort, Pauline Evans of Simpsonville, Faye Russell of Louisville and Barbara Beach, Alice Taylor and Ernestina Shouse, all of Shelbyville and three brothers, Lee Evans, Jr. of Shelbyville, William C. Evans of Versailles and Richard Chambers of Louisville.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, August 24 at 1 p.m. at Bethel A.M.E. Church with visitation 6-9 p.m. on Monday at the Church. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. Rev. Fred Hale will deliver the eulogy and Rev. Tobias Pace will serve as officiator.
