George Walter Cottrell, Jr. was born to the union of George and Eva (Ashby) Cottrell on March 20, 1966 in Shelbyville, KY. He was diagnosed with ALS on February 28, 2011. On Tuesday, June 5th, 2012, his body was overcome by the effects of the disease and his spirit was released to our God in Heaven.

George attended Shelby County Public Schools and graduated as president of Shelby County High School's class of 1984. He continued his education at Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro where he received Bachelor of Arts Degrees in Criminal Justice and Vocal Performance in 1989. He obtained a Master of Arts Degree in Education from Spalding University in 2007.

He married Andrea Bumpus of Uniontown, KY in 1990. The couple raised two sons, Jehren and Quinten. As a family, they attended St. John United Methodist Church. George held the church position of Choir Director, from August 1989 thru February 2011. He also served a term as Trustee Chairman and facilitated the acquisition of the property upon which the new sanctuary would be built.

George began a career with the Kentucky Department of Corrections in January 1990. During his career, he held positions of Correctional Officer, Classification/Treatment Officer, Offender Rehabilitation Specialist, Youth Worker Supervisor, Youth Service Program Coordinator, and Probation/Parole Officer. His career path changed in the fall of 2002 and he became a Special Education Teacher with Shelby County Public Schools. He remained employed until his health rendered him ineffective in 2011.

George had passion for singing which began in childhood. He was a member of the Life Singers, a community-based youth choir, while in high school. At Kentucky Wesleyan, he sang and toured with the Wesleyan Singers, Owensboro Symphony and Evansville Philharmonic. After college he sang at numerous weddings, services, ballgames and special events throughout the state.

Surviving to mourn are his wife, Andrea; sons, Jehren and Quinten; father, George, Sr. (Donna) Cottrell; brothers, Michael and Garrick "Poochy" (Karen) Cottrell; sister, Quintella Cottrell; paternal grandfather, William Cottrell, Cincinnati, OH; paternal grandmother, Sarah Mitchell, Frankfort, KY; Almost brothers, Kelvin "Cat" (Shanta) Catlett, Lee "Mont" (Velicia) Cardwell; brother-in-law, William Bumpus, Uniontown, KY; sister-in-law, Teresa Petway, Fort Washington, MD; nephews, David Brooks, Keshawn Catlett; nieces, Megan Cottrell, Milicent Greene, Aurelia Spaulding, and Catara Catlett.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 2012 at the Mike Casey Gymnasium at Shelby County High School with the Revs. Robert Marshall, Kilen Gray, and Lamont Jenkins officiating. Public visitation will be 11:00 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Friday at the Shannon Funeral Home. The family will be at the funeral home after 4:00 p.m. Friday to receive visitors. At 7:30 p.m. Friday, there will a "time of reflection" for anyone who would like to share their thoughts about George's life. Burial will be in the Grove Hill Cemetery.
