Opal “Brownie” Browne Wheeler McGaughey, 84, Louisville, died Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at Baptist East Hospital following an illness. She was born in Jessamine County and was the daughter of the late Allen Howard and Ruby Nell Browne Wheeler. She grew up in Shelby County. She was a graduate of Gleneyrie School and attended business college in Lexington for two years. She was a bookkeeper throughout her working years and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was raised in the Burks Branch Baptist Church and was currently a member at Southeast Christian Church. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved meeting new people and visiting new places.
In addition to her parents, two brothers, James Allen Wheeler and Howard Thompson “Tommy” Wheeler and his wife, Nancy, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Lester C. McGaughey, Sr. of Fern Creek; two daughters, Sharon Kay Helm of Mt. Washington and Pam (Wayne) Ashby of Shelbyville; one son, Les McGaughey, Jr. of Bowling Green; two sisters, Nancy (Larry) Williams of Simpsonville and Mary Jo (Jimmy) Clark of Eminence; one sister-in-law, Lenora Wheeler of Eminence; three grandchildren, Sher (Rick) Carruso, Michelle Burke and Mathew (Bridget) Ashby; four great-grandchildren, Thomas, Erica, Kyeleigh and Braelynn and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be Thursday, July 28, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home with visitation 2-8 p.m. on Wednesday. Rev. Marshall Phillips will officiate and burial will follow at Grove Hill Cemetery.
