The history of our funeral home:
The Hoyt G. Hickey & Son Funeral Home Inc. is truly a family business.
Hoyt G. Hickey Sr. was born in Whitley County, Kentucky in 1923. After
serving in the Army during the Second World War he attended the Gupton
Jones College of Mortuary Science in Nashville, TN. Upon graduation
in 1947, he found employment with the Frank Allen Funeral Home in Williamson,
WV. While there he met and married Mae Fern Coley. Fern was born in
Pike County, Kentucky in 1928. She received her Funeral Directors license
in 1958.
Hoyt and Fern Hickey moved to Monticello in 1952 to work with the Ed Lee
Funeral Home. In February of 1953 they purchased the Funeral Home from
Mr. Lee and soon began building the original structure that is now occupied
by the Hoyt G. Hickey & Son Funeral Home.
In 1954 they gave birth to their first child, Glenn Hickey Jr. Glenn
grew up working in the firm. He attended school in Monticello and later
graduated from the Kentucky School of Mortuary Science in 1975. After
graduating, he married Sheila Dunnington and returned home to work in
the family business.
Hoyt and Fern's second child, Jane was born in 1960. She also grew up and was
educated in Monticello. However, Jane earned an Accounting degree from
the University of Kentucky in 1981. Jane also works with the family.
After 48 years of improvements, the present 10,000 square foot structures
contains two funeral chapels, lounges (smoking and non-smoking), handicap
facilities, children's play room and nursery, a large casket display
room and arrangement office with parking for well over 100 vehicles.
Since 1953, the goal of the Hoyt G. Hickey & Son Funeral Home has been
to provide to each family the services they request in the most compassionate
way.
